CD and DVD piracy happens a lot - millions of people take part in it, either by making pirated copies or by buying or downloading them. This guide looks at reasons not to make pirated copies, starting with the fact that it is illegal. If you make pirated copies of CDs or DVDs and get caught then you could end up in a lot of trouble. This can include large fines and imprisonment, so it's really not worth it.

Illegally duplicating CDs and DVDs also deprives the creative industries of money, and this is another reason you really should duplicate copies. When the creative industries aren't getting the money they are owed for the work they have done - work that millions of people enjoy - it really isn't fair. Many of the industries are already struggling financially because developments such as e-sales have driven down prices and it's only made worse by people duplicating CDs and DVDs as it means their returns are even smaller.

In turn, this then has an impact on the rest of the industry and eventually the consumers. This is because having less money means that people in creative industries are less likely to take risks on new projects as they can't guarantee the returns on their work. This means that future endeavors are put at risk and there is a risk of there being less good creative material being made, which is obviously also a loss for the consumers who enjoy such material.

Most pirated copies of DVDs and CDs are also not of very good quality, which is another reason against duplicating them in the first place. Both sides also lose out here, as it means consumers don't enjoy the products as they were originally intended to be and the creative industries are damaged by these sub-standard products. Most pirated copies are of poor quality due to the software used to rip them to another disk and they often lack the original features.

One final reason not to pirated copies of DVDs and CDs is that they simply aren't the same as the genuine article: the experience just isn't as good when someone comes along and rips off a creative product. After all, lots of money, effort and time goes into producing CDs and DVDs so it isn't fair on anyone to duplicate the creative work that has been done. It's in the interests of both industry and consumers not to duplicate DVDs and CDs.
